While it’s true that you cannot stop the aging process, you can certainly slow it down. Adopting the right lifestyle habits will keep you feeling young and spritely no matter your actual age! Here are a few ways I like to keep myself young and fit!
Cut Out Junk Food
According to Eat This, Not That!, certain foods will cause you to age faster, particularly those full of preservatives, empty carbs, and bad fats. For example, high fructose corn syrup—an ingredient found in nearly every food containing added sugars—has been found to damage skin and exacerbate wrinkles!
I make a point to forgo junk food and replace it with healthy alternatives. A website I visit often, Foodies Today, recommends stocking your pantry with versatile ingredients like beans, whole grains, chicken stock, and frozen vegetables that will work in a variety of healthy recipes.
If you want to make things even easier for yourself, try subscribing to a meal kit delivery service. Many meal delivery services offer low-calorie, plant-based, paleo, and keto options, so they can work with nearly any diet! Before signing up for a meal kit delivery plan, be sure to research cost, quality of ingredients, and customer reviews.
Maintain Your Mobility
Mobility isn’t just a concern for seniors. People of any age can experience tight muscles, joint stiffness, and chronic pain. If that is you, you know it can interfere with life and make you feel much older than you are. Fortunately, regular exercise will keep your body limber! Trust me on this one! Try to participate in a range of physical activities, including cardio, strength, flexibility, and balance training. Practicing yoga is a fantastic way to support your range of motion and spine health, so if you’re starting to feel stiff, find a good YouTube yoga instructor and get a comfortable mat. Yoga can also help you learn to love and appreciate your body, whatever your age! While I love to bend and stretch, my favorite (and arguably the hardest) pose is Corpse Pose. It took months to master, but now I end each session by relaxing from the inside out.
Surround Yourself with Positive People
Who doesn’t feel younger while laughing with friends? Surround yourself with people that make you feel good, and you’ll never feel older than your years. According to Forbes, spending time with positive people relieves stress and helps us live healthier, happier lives. Toxic relationships, on the other hand, can encourage unhealthy behaviors and negative thought patterns that can drain your energy and destroy your confidence. Just like cutting out junk food from your life, it’s time to cut out the people who make you feel bad. This was a hard lesson to learn, and I wholeheartedly encourage this before making any other changes. Once you gain the confidence to let toxic people go, you’ll learn how to bring positive influences in.
Not only does stress make you feel older, studies show that stress actually accelerates biological aging. Chronic stress has an incredibly damaging effect on the body and mind, causing inflammation and impairing the body’s ability to repair itself—which can even show up in the lines on your face. I spend one afternoon focused on myself each week. This might be taking a hot bath or stepping out with a camera to capture images of nature. Basically, I do one activity each week that makes me feel alive and refreshed.
Fortunately, taking time out for a little self-care every day is a great way to combat stress and avoid these negative effects. Take a nap in the middle of the day, soak in a hot bubble bath before bed, go for a refreshing walk in the rain, or book a weekend getaway to your dream destination—just for you! A little self-pampering will do a lot for your mental health, so don’t be afraid to take a break from your hectic life when you need to relax.
While it’s normal to resist aging, it’s important to acknowledge that growing older is a natural and inevitable part of life. Your age is just a number—it shouldn’t define who you are or what you can do! Instead, your true age is much more about how you feel on the inside. Every day, take steps to support your ongoing health so you can maintain the energy and vigor you need to live the life you want at any age!
