Ashwagandha is an ancient, medicinal herb that is an essential part of Ayurveda, a popular form of alternative medicine based on Indian principles of natural healing. The Sanskrit term Ayurveda translates to “knowledge of life.” Some of these treatments are now gaining recognition in the United States, such as the use of ashwagandha in supplement form.

Ashwagandha is known to help the body adapt to or deal with all kinds of stressors, from physical to mental, including anxiety and inflammation. Here are some proven health benefits of consuming ashwagandha root:

Stabilizes Blood Sugar Levels

Blood sugar, or glucose, is the main sugar found in blood. It is an important source of energy and provides nutrients to the body. If you struggle with either having too high or too low of blood sugar, you need to focus on ways to stabilize your levels to achieve overall wellness.

According to studies, ashwagandha extract may reduce blood sugar levels for those who manage diabetes. One test-tube study found that ashwagandha has the ability to increase insulin secretion and improve insulin sensitivity in muscle cells.

Why Ashwagandha is Essential for Health & Wellness

Can Provide Pain Relief

Ashwagandha can work as a pain reliever due to its ability to prevent pain signals from traveling along the central nervous system.  If you deal with arthritis, the most common form of relief is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These are very hard on the body and can increase the risk for gastrointestinal distress. An alternative remedy is to take ashwagandha.

A study published in the Journal of Ayurvedic and Integrative Medicine evaluated 60 patients with knee pain who were randomized to take ashwagandha at a dosage of 500mg per day, 250mg per day, or placebo for 12 weeks. All patients discontinued analgesic therapy 7–10 days before the start of the study, and symptoms were evaluated at baseline, four, eight, and 12 weeks.

The high-dose group had significantly greater improvements than the low-dose group. Subjects taking the higher dosage improved most rapidly, with significant changes detected as early as four weeks. Ashwagandha contains anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective properties based on experimental studies. It blocks the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) pathway and has analgesic effects. Based on research, this root extract can offer an effective alternative to NSAIDs for patients with joint pain.
