The good news is that there are several ways to mitigate dry skin and dandruff right now before the winter chill sets in. Follow these steps to keep alligator skin at bay this season. Choose Your Bathing Products Wisely

You might be surprised to discover what harsh ingredients lurk in your soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. The rule of thumb is the more lather there is, the harsher the ingredients. Products with fragrance contain alcohol, a drying agent. Look for all natural, alcohol free, chemical free, gentle soaps and shampoos. It’ll make a huge difference. 

Shorten Your Shower

This can be a tough one, especially in winter when long, hot showers and baths seem like just what the doctor ordered. But not so say researchers. Hot showers do a number on your skin, stripping it of its natural oils and protective barrier leaving skin feeling rough, dry and irritated. Health experts recommend taking warm showers, no longer than 5 to 10 minutes maximum. This is one of the biggest things you can do to help your skin and to conserve water. Additionally, researchers have found that it is actually healthier to bathe 2 to 3 times a week as opposed to every day. Oh, and instead of running your bath towel over your wet skin, pat dry. 

Moisturize Naturally

This is the time to really do your homework. Many of the moisturizers out there contain alcohol, a drying agent, and other unnatural ingredients that can actually strip moisture rather than hydrate your skin. Look for all natural eco-friendly products that contain skin healthy ingredients like sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and jojoba. These natural oils in combination with other natural ingredients create a protective barrier on your skin, penetrating deep and help keep moisture in.

Keep HVAC Systems Maintained

When we close the windows and doors and turn up the heat, moisture from the air is zapped. If furnaces are not maintained properly, ventilation problems can occur and the same dry air just continues circulating through your home. In the meantime, it depletes the moisture from your skin leaving your complexion dull and skin itchy and flaky.

Inside Out
